College Intern -Command Center and Utility Services

MDC Hartford, CT (Onsite) Seasonal / Temp

COMMAND CENTER & UTILITY SERVICES

The Metropolitan District is a non-profit municipal corporation chartered by the Connecticut General Assembly in 1929 to provide potable water and sewerage services on a regional basis.
Today, the MDC provides quality water supply, water pollution control, mapping, and household hazardous waste collection to eight member municipalities - Bloomfield, East Hartford, Hartford, Newington, Rocky Hill, West Hartford, Wethersfield and Windsor - and to portions of other towns in the region.
The Command Center and Utility Services is looking to hire full-time (40 hours/week) college interns for the MDC's summer internship program.
The Intern will be assigned to the company's Command Center or Utility Services department in Hartford, CT

The program will begin on June 1, 2026, and end on July 31, 2026

DUTIES

  • Candidates working at the Command Center, which is the point of contact for customers/personnel to report water/sewer emergencies will be responsible for working with staff to handle and route routine matters, as well as potential critical situations.
  • Candidates working in Utility Services, where the primary responsibility of the department is permitting and inspection of all new connections to the District's sewage collection and water distribution systems, will work alongside Utility Services Technicians, Engineering Technicians, and Project Engineers to learn the functions of the department as well as assist with day-to-day operations.
    The intern will have the opportunity to shadow industry professionals in the field and oversee major programs such as the District's Backwater Valve Program and FOG (Fats, Oils, Greases) Program, Septic Reimbursements, and Call Before You Dig.

QUALIFICATIONS

College student currently enrolled in a BA, BS or Associate's program, majoring in business or communications.
Prior customer service experience preferred.

The selected intern must possess a high level of proficiency in Microsoft Office.

Candidate must possess strong verbal & written communication skills.
Candidate should be self-motivated, well organized, responsible and have the ability to work well with others.
